Obstacle Rush

Obstacle Rush is a 2-player fast-paced competitive platformer with features of level building. Each player designs an obstacle course for the other to play, and whoever reaches the end faster with less deaths, is the winner of the round.

There are 3 phases:

  • Preview Phase — in this phase, players will explore the base level, getting to know the environment and how the character behaves
  • Design Phase — in this phase, each player will place obstacles on the base level, creating an obstacle course for the opponent
  • Play Phase — in this phase, each player will play the obstacle course created by their opponent, and try to reach the end

The game features a smooth 2D player controller, a fully-fledged level editor, 4 different player skins, 3 different levels with 2 rounds each, 3 different obstacles that can be placed, and a 2-player leaderboard to keep track of score throughout the matches.


The Idea

This prototype of a game idea came from a Master’s University project in a team of 3, for a Game Design Course. The goal of the project was to create a prototype within 2 weeks that fit into the theme The Game After the Game.

Not only did we need to create this prototype, but the whole course was based on the Google’s Design Sprint Methodology, having each day of the Design Sprint be one week of the course.

We went through the 6 phases of the methodology: understand, define, sketch, decide, prototype and validate.
